Condition Double Chin

Double Chin

A double chin, medically known as submental fullness, is a common aesthetic condition where excess fat, loose skin, or muscle laxity accumulates beneath the chin. It can affect people of all ages and body types and is not always linked to being overweight.

What Causes a Double Chin?

A double chin can develop due to one or a combination of the following factors:

  • Genetics: Some individuals are naturally predisposed to store fat under the chin, even with a healthy lifestyle.

  • Weight Fluctuations: Weight gain can increase fat deposits in the submental area, though a double chin can appear even in slim individuals.

  • Aging: As we age, skin loses collagen and elasticity, leading to sagging around the jawline and neck.

  • Poor Posture: Prolonged screen use and forward head posture can weaken neck and chin muscles over time.

  • Reduced Muscle Tone: Weak platysma and chin muscles may allow skin and fat to droop.
