Condition Acne Scars

What Is Acne Scarring?

Acne scarring is the long-term result of inflammation and collagen damage caused by acne lesions. When breakouts penetrate deep into the skin, the healing process produces either excess or insufficient collagen. This imbalance forms permanent textural changes, known as scars.

Types of Acne Scars

Acne scarring can appear in different forms, including:

  • Rolling scars: Broad, shallow depressions that create a wavy texture

  • Boxcar scars: More defined, “crater-like” indentations

  • Ice pick scars: Narrow, deeper pits

  • Raised scars: Firm bumps that sit above the skin surface (more common on the chest/back)
