Skin Rejuvenation with Microdermabrasion

You’ve likely heard the term microdermabrasion. Although the process has been around for a while, unless you’ve actually had microdermabrasion done, it’s hard to know what to expect during and after the treatment.

As Kelowna’s advanced skin care experts, Healthpoint Laser Aesthetics is here to educate our clients and provide safe, successful skin care and treatments.

So, where do we start?

Well, let’s start by explaining what this fancy microdermabrasion word actually means.

Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive skin rejuvenation procedure that uses a mechanical method of gently exfoliating the superficial layer of the skin.

It is a fantastic way to freshen up the skin and you’ll notice these benefits:

  • skin care products work better
  • decrease in fine lines and large pores
  • skin improvement from environmental damage such as smoking and excess sun exposure
  • even skin tone
  • firmer, clearer, plumper and dewier skin

Sounds great, right?  It is!

But what should you consider before your first appointment?

Determine your skin type.  All skin types benefit from exfoliation however different types of exfoliation are needed for each skin type.  At Healthpoint Laser Aesthetics, we start with a skin assessment to ensure microdermabrasion is the right choice of treatment for you.

You can even get your FREE skin assessment by contacting us here or setting up a FREE consultation with our Kelowna laser clinic.

What will happen during the actual treatment?

Anything with the word “dermabrasion” in it sounds scary!  But in fact, it’s quite the opposite.  The appointment will last about 45 minutes and can easily be done over a lunch hour.

Microdermabrasion only affects the outer layers of the skin but it’s a much deeper level of exfoliation than you could ever do yourself at home with a masque or scrub. Healthpoint Laser Aesthetics uses a microdermabrasion system that utilizes unrefined diamond chips in the tip of instrument to remove dead skin. Yes, diamonds!  We’re fancy. Treatments are painless and clients can return to work immediately after the treatment. No downtime!

Microdermabrasion is a physical exfoliation.  I know what you’re thinking . . . sandpaper.  Ouch!  Don’t worry.  This is gentle, slow and painless.

Sounding great so far, right?

Time to book your appointment.

Before you come into our Kelowna office for your Microdermabrasion, let’s prepare.

This first step is probably the hardest part for our patients.  About 3-5 days prior to your treatment, stop using any exfoliants on the area we’re going to treat.  No scrubs.  No enzymes.  No retinols.  No masques.  No acids.   These make the skin sensitive and we don’t want to cause any damage to sensitive skin.  Plus, if you’ve exfoliated away the dead skin cells, the microdermabrasion will attack healthy cells because there’s nothing there to work on.  This can irritate or even damage the skin.

Sun exposure overall is damaging to your skin but it is imperative that you avoid sun exposure at least 5 days prior to your treatment.  Fall, winter and spring are all great times to get in for your appointment.  We all know what our summers are like here in Kelowna!  Sun, sun and more sun.

Now that you’ve been buffed, pampered and refreshed, what do you do after your Microdermabrasion?

We said no sun prior to the treatment.  Same goes for post treatment.  Refrain from soaking up the rays (if you must) for a good 5 days.

We’ve just removed a layer of unwanted dead skin cells.  This is prime time to introduce a new skin care regime. Our skin care experts will go through suggestions with you based on your skin type. Skin products typically work superficially but now that the barrier is gone you can give your skin a chance to soak up all the goodness that quality skin care products have to offer.  Dramatic results await!

Finally, take a break from your regular exfoliants for a few days.  There’s no need to exfoliate.  You just had the best exfoliation of your skin’s life.

We can’t wait to see you at Healthpoint Laser Aesthetics very soon for your pampering.
